"Yankee Doodles" Metal Lunchbox and Thermos

Description

Acquired from Christie's South Kensington, merchandising tie-in lunchbox and Thermos featuring characters from the comic strip "Yankee Doodles" (1973-1977).

Lunchbox: Metal lunchbox with a hinged lid and a red plastic handle. The lunchbox has an image on the front of Yankee Doodles animated characters in a boat, with "Yankee Doodles" written in black against a red background at the top with "THERMOS" in the proper right corner. One character on front has speech bubble that reads "DIDN'T / ANYBODY / READ THE/ BULLETIN /BOARD?". The back of the lunchbox shows animated versions of Betsy Ross, George Washington, and Ben Franklin with speech bubbles that read "BETSY ROSS, / YOU'VE OUTDONE / YOURSELF!" and "WAIT'LL YOU / SEE THE / BIG ONE, / GENERAL WASHINGTON". At bottom edge of back side is signatures of creators "Ben, Fred and Don" and "© LOS ANGELES TIMES". The sides of the lunchbox are decorated with red, white and blue stripes with stars on the top edge and more comic strip like drawings. Bottom edge reads "THERMOS DIVISION / KING SEELEY THERMOS CO.".

Thermos: Blue plastic Thermos with a red plastic lid. The side has image of Ben Franklin Holding a kite that resembles the American flag. Writing underneath. The lid reads "THERMOS" on the top.

Condition

Lunchbox: Remnants of tape adhesive on top back side of lunchbox. Minor scratches and rusting throughout. Slight loss of color on front center panel of lunchbox. Small dent in lower proper right corner on bottom edge. Accretion on top edge.

Thermos: Part of sticker attached to side of Thermos is missing at the top proper left corner. Minor dust buildup throughout. Minor scratches throughout.
